The annual event is on the campus of Northern State University. It's a weeklong civics-based program designed to help students understand and appreciate the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the systems of government in the United States and South Dakota.
Monday is largely dedicated to registration and getting Boys Staters settled in their residence halls, Gene Schumacher, adjutant commander of the American Legion Aberdeen post, said. Registration is set for noon-2:30 p.m. at the Barnett Center.
Girls State begins Monday on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
Attendees at Boys State and Girls State are assigned a town and a hypothetical political party. Throughout the week, they run for offices, culminating in the election of a governor on Friday. Delegates from South Dakota Boys State and South Dakota Girls State are also selected to attend Boys Nation and Girls Nation later in the year.
Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion. In South Dakota, it was founded in 1940 in Aberdeen. The South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Girls State.
