People who are homeless in Aberdeen are encouraged to visit one of a number of local sites to be counted Tuesday — and "homeless" does not have to mean living on the street.
People who are "doubled up," or those who would be homeless without the help of friends or family, will also be counted, said Pat Moore of the Homeless Coalition of Aberdeen.
The recently formed coalition — which consists of organizations including Aberdeen Housing Authority, the state Department of Labor, Lutheran Social Services, The Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, Safe Harbor and Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ — is coordinating this year's homeless count.
Aberdeen's count is part of the statewide South Dakota Homeless Count taking place at various locations Tuesday, conducted by the South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium.
Moore said the Aberdeen coalition is strongly encouraging people to come forward and be counted so the organization can prove a need exists in Aberdeen. Then, the coalition can work to get funding to appropriately meet that need, he said. The need is expected to increase with 1,000 jobs coming to Aberdeen — people are coming to town, but jobs might not work out for everyone, and families might struggle to find affordable housing, he said.
