WASHINGTON—Vice President Dick Cheney will address the Virginia General Assembly at its opening session in Jamestown on Wednesday, his office confirmed Monday.
Cheney's planned appearance at Historic Jamestowne promises to increase national attention to the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in the New World.
Cheney's visit comes at the invitation of Republican leaders of the General Assembly. He will speak in a historic church at the settlement.
"He is coming on Jan. 10," said Megan McGinn, Cheney's deputy press secretary. "Speaker (William J.) Howell and Sen. (Thomas K.) Norment invited the vice president to come down to share in the celebration surrounding the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown."
A U.S. Treasury official is also expected to be on hand for the unveiling of a commemorative coin.
Following Kaine's address, state lawmakers are expected to board buses to return to Richmond. The legislature's Joint Rules Committee had approved the schedule last month.
