$2.8 Million Donated for Charter Schools
The Broad Foundation will give Green Dot Public Schools a $2.8-million grant to help build additional charter high schools in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Green Dot is a nonprofit network of charter high schools that operates Oscar De La Hoya Animo in Boyle Heights and Animo Leadership and Animo Inglewood in Inglewood.
Steve Barr, Green Dot’s chief executive, said the organization plans to open two schools this fall and eight to 12 more in the next few years.
“Opening high schools in needy areas is establishing hope where there wasn’t any for a long time,” Barr said.
Kevin Hall, chief operating officer for the Broad Foundation, said the organization granted the funds to Green Dot because Los Angeles is in need of high-quality schools.
“We’re very impressed with their track record,” Hall said. “We were very impressed with their team and the students at the schools.” The Broad Foundation, established by Los Angeles businessman and philanthropist Eli Broad, provides grants for urban schools.
