The search for two escaped inmates in Allegan County has taken a twist. Detectives say they believe the two are with their girlfriends, who police are also looking for now.
Authorities believe Brittany Rector, 17, and Laura Grauman, are with the escapees. Brittany is dating 32 year-old Kenneth Lee Grauman, II and Laura, 23 year-old Gregory Allen Bradshaw. The men are suspected of escaping from the Baldwin area halfway house on Saturday, and then reportedly stole a Jeep in Kent County.
The Jeep was spotted Monday night in Allegan County, tearing through a field. The pair was spotted earlier in Montcalm and Newaygo Counties but evaded the search parties.
Monday, police organized a search from both the ground and air near Dorr, but weren't able to find them. They are considered potentially dangerous.
"I told my wife, we're sitting there, I said well, I wouldn't be surprised if she's with him,” Rectors’ stepfather Steven Olexa said.
The last time he saw Brittany was around 4:30 p.m. Friday.
"She wasn't herself." Olexa added. He went on to say, "She wanted to be with that Laura girl we told her 'no', she wanted to bring her here and we told her 'no'."
He believes the women have only been friends for a few months and is baffled by Kenneth and Brittany’s relationship and when they started dating.
"Don't know, never seen him, never want to see him, just want my kid home,” he said.
Brittany appears to have left just with the clothes on her back, a bag and her cell phone; however, it appears she shut it off, Steve said. Her car is at home, so he believes she walked to Laura’s house.
If the women are with the escaped inmates, they do not have any indication if they went on their own or were forced, Lt. Frank Baker with Allegan County Sheriff’s Department said.
"Obviously we're concerned about their safety, these gentlemen have demonstrated they have no concern for theirs and we're concerned that someone that may be with them could get caught up in the middle of thi,." Lt. Baker said.
Olexa said Brittany, a once good student and athlete, has changed. However, he believes she still can have a bright future.
"I want her home, she can do this, she can be whatever she wants to be in life she just has to come home," Olexa added.
Federal Authorities are now offering a $1,500 reward for the apprehension of Kenneth Grauman, II, and Gregory Bradshaw. If you have information, call the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.
