HOLLAND—One man is leading an online crusade to honor a Michigan sports legend.
In September, Holland resident Kevin McNutt started a cause page on Facebook. The goal: to rename Comerica Park so that it honors Ernie Harwell.
McNutt got the idea after the Hall of Fame broadcaster announced he had terminal cancer. In just a few short months, the site has grown to include more than 19,000 members. McNutt says he's not surprised.
"He was the best. There's nothing like listening to baseball and Ernie Harwell; they're synonymous," he said.
So far McNutt has written letters to the Tigers franchise and to Comerica Bank. While he hasn't heard back from Comerica, he did receive a letter from the Tigers. In it, they say they've named the press box after Harwell to honor the great legacy of the man who spent decades announcing baseball games.
