CALIPATRIA — Isaac Valenzuela likes art so much he boasted about one of his works to a former teacher.
“That one’s mine,” Isaac, 10, told Carol Whitted, a retired third-grade teacher from Brawley. “I really like it a lot. This is my first time doing this.”
Isaac was among 20 fourth-grade students whose watercolor and oil pastel artworks were displayed Wednesday during an exhibit that showcased their talent at Fremont Primary School.
The portraits of sunflowers and other images were the result of nine weeks’ work, said art teacher Gail Watkins.
Each student had more than five pieces of their works on display, resulting in more than 100 works being exhibited for the students, and their relatives, to look at.
Vincent Van Gogh and Piet Mondrian were the artists the students studied for the project that is expected to involve studying Pablo Picasso and Monet for third- and second-graders, Watkins said.
“So, they learn a little about art history and art appreciation,” Watkins said.
Whitted is a friend of Watkins’ who stopped by along with fellow retired teacher Becky Bristow to check out the art show.
Whitted marveled at the variety of art work and admired the professional look of the display.
“Beautiful,” she said.
