This year’s individual winners are: first place, Abel Garcia, a senior from Calipatria High; second place, Jericho Calsada of Calipatria; and third place, Ralph Garcia from Brawley Union High School.
The competition consisted of a three-part examination: gas torch metal cutting, welding of four types and a written exam. The welders with the top three overall scores are presented with gift cards.
For the second straight year, Calipatria High won the team welding with team members Seth Valdez, Jericho Calsada, Fabian Santoyo, Abel Garcia and Raymond Romero. A contender this year and less than two points behind was second-place Brawley Union High School. Holtville High School won third place.
“The local businesses have made this event possible. I am so appreciative of their support for our students,” said BUHS welding teacher Frank Cervantes.
The competition supplies were donated by Airgas and Spreadco Inc. of El Centro and Dowden Welding and Stiff Equipment of Brawley. The involvement of members of the industry is crucial to the success of this event, according to a press release from IVROP. Students are able to receive constructive comments from the judges on their welds and cut products. Local welders for the event were Luis Balderama of Dowden Welding, who was last year’s individual winner, Efrem Gastelum of Spreadco, and Paul Fernandez of Stiff Equipment.
This year’s competition was May 23 at BUHS and involved Calipatria, Brawley, Holtville, Imperial High and Southwest High.
Sam Urie, Southwest High School welding teacher, is hoping his team will have home field advantage as they hope to host the competition next year.
