The federal government will spend $44 million to repair the Howard Hanson Dam south of Seattle. Washington Senator Patty Murray announced Thursday that she was able to include the dam repairs in a supplemental appropriations bill.

The dam overlooks the Green River Valley and has presented a threat to the area after heavy rains last year weakened the structure.

Senator Murray and Governor Gregoire have been pressuring the government to provide funds to repair the Dam. They argued a flood in the Green River Valley would devastate the 170,000 residents living there.
