The trial of a teenager accused of shooting a hiker on a Sauk Mountain trail last summer has begun. The 14-year-old says he thought Pam Almli was a bear when he shot her from about 120 yards away last August.

The boy was bear hunting with his 16-year-old brother at the time.

Almli was wearing a blue coat and a backpack when she was shot.

Many Northwest hikers as well as Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles of Seattle are pushing for new legislation that would require kids under 16 to be accompanied by a state-licensed hunter over 18 who has held a hunting license for three years.
