The Alajawan Brown Foundation gave away nearly 1,000 backpacks to children preparing for the upcoming school year Saturday morning in Renton.
The foundation, along with the Skyway Fire District, had hundreds of children lined up before 10 a.m. Volunteers handed out the backpacks - stuffed with pens, notebooks and pencils - at the Skyway Fire Training Center.
The giveaway is the vision of Ayanna and Louis Brown, the parents of slain Alajawan Brown. The 12-year-old Brown was shot by a gang member as he stepped off a bus in 2010.
Ayanna and Louis Brown started the charity in memory of their son. They say they are already planning next year's backpack giveaway.
