At a Deluxe Nail Salon in Dallas, digits are a big deal.
"I'm Italian. I talk with my hands so people have to see them and they need to look nice" Jiacoma Cusimano said.
As a rule of thumb, manicurists know a lot about hands and fingers. But today we surprised them and their clients with some science.
"Really? How are they studying that?" Anne Trussell asked us through laughter.
Researchers examined the remains of early apes and other ancient types I can't pronounce. They found promiscuous primate species have low index to ring finger ratios. Translation: the more similar in length your index and ring fingers are, the more skanky your ancestors were.
"That's crazy. I didn't know finger length pertained to something like that" Jiacoma Cusimano said.
But shockingly, some celebrity photos threaten to disprove the theory. From what we saw in pictures, Charlie Sheen, Tara Reid and John Mayer appear to rank low on the skank scale.
"I think it's just fun" Jennifer Nguyen said.
Winn is from Vietnam. In her culture the hand says a lot about health, character and the future. But promiscuity was a new one for her, she told us very politely, even though her two fingers in question were similar in length.
"Thank you very much for letting me know. Maybe I'm just scary" Jennifer Nguyen said.
SMU student Anne Trussell seemed instantly guilty hen I first commanded her to show me her hand.
"Tell us about your ancestors" I ordered.
"They're pretty skanky, it looks like" Turssell admitted.
Then she seemed to backtrack a bit.
"Well, I don't know. I mean....(pause)...They're pretty much...my ring...my for...."
"Skanky!" I semi-yelled.
"Yes, skanky." Trusell agreed, then laughed and laughed and laughed.
The "guilty" ones we talked today aren't sure if the research results are worth "talking to the hand" over. But now at least, they can blame it on their, if they like.
"I will. Runs in the family" Jiacoma Cusimano said with finality.
