FORT WORTH—Wednesday, the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth almost seemed like an actual campaign stop. Both Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis were campaigning, but it was for viewers, not voters.
"We're out before the presidential debates. So, this will be a nice appetizer for the debates," joked Ferrell.
"Neither one of them are that great. They're really not that smart, either one of them," said Galifianakis.
"We can't thank you enough for turning out today," said Ferrell, to a crowd of hundreds.
"Long days, hard work. You get a break in the middle of the day to come out here and see somebody like Will Ferrell. It's a big treat," said Chris Vogt.
A big tug-of-war match was the main event. Galifianakis's team won.
"We got legs. We got legs and we're pretty tough," Chris Ellis.
"They cheated," said Ryan May, who was on Ferrell's team. "They had stuff on their shoes, and then they had other stuff. I'm telling you."
The big story of the day was the Texas heat.
"Space heaters are coming in. Don't worry," joked Ferrell, to the crowd.
It got so hot, it fried the soundboard.
The comedy duo spent the last few minutes on stage shouting to the crowd, without microphones.
"Actually, I can smell your musk," joked Ferrell, to the sweaty crowd.
That comment elicited a "Sex panther!" shout from Ellis.
The appearance was meant to be a fun, morale boost as much as a promotion of the film.
"Not only is it something that fits with the movie, in terms of politicians are always courting the military. But, it's nice just to reach out to the fans here, to the families who are serving our country," said Ferrell.
