DEL MAR -- A boxer mix was crowned San Diego's Ugliest Dog over the weekend at the 16th annual Ugliest Dog Competition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
His name is Chomper, and judges agreed that his incredibly long tongue earned him the superlative title.
The runner up at this year's event was a dog named Rascal. Owner Dan Adreny entered Rascal in the competition, but he said that ugly is a very subjective judgment.
"I don't know why he's an ugly dog. I think he's really handsome myself," Adreny said.
The event attracted dogs from around the state. Hundreds of dogs competed 13 categories, including Best Mutt and Dog That Looks Most Like Its Owner. Two of the competitors in the latter category dressed up to look like a popular singer and actress from the 1940s and 1950s.
"I've always wanted to look like Carmen Miranda, and she's a cocker spaniel, so I put those two things together," the dog owner said. "Now I'm going to use that as my new little theme: Cocker Miranda and Carmen Miranda."
The event was sponsored by the Del Mar Kiwanis Club. Proceeds from the competition benefit programs at the Helen Woodward Animal Center and the Animal Safe House program at Rancho Coastal Humane Society.
