DRAWING ON HOPE: A laboratory worker at Family Cord Blood Services in Santa Monica prepares samples of umbilical cord blood for storage in a liquid nitrogen tank. The blood was collected after birth and sent by courier service. Parents have paid companies hundreds of millions of dollars to bank cord blood, despite extremely low odds that they will ever need it.
