Japanese businessman Kazuyoshi Miura committed suicide in jail less than 24 hours after being taken to Los Angeles to face trial on a charge of conspiring to murder his wife. A timeline of the case:

-- Nov. 18, 1981: Miura and his wife, Kazumi, 28, are shot while visiting Los Angeles.

-- 1982: Kazumi dies after spending a year in a coma.

-- 1984: Japanese magazine publishes stories saying Miura collected about $1.4 million from life insurance policies on his wife. An actress says Miura asked her to kill his wife in a separate incident.

-- 1985: Miura convicted of attempted murder in the case involving the actress and is sentenced to six years in prison.

-- 1988: Los Angeles County charges Miura with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

-- 1994: Miura is convicted in Japan of his wife's murder.

-- 2003: Conviction is overturned by Japanese Supreme Court.

-- Feb. 22, 2008: Miura is arrested on 1988 warrant when he visits U.S. territory of Saipan.

-- Sept. 26: Murder charge is dismissed on grounds of double jeopardy.
