TRADING PLACES: John Ryan picks up the newspaper in front of the modest home his family rents in Wilmore, Ky. In 2003, After the Ryans filed for bankruptcy, the six-bedroom Victorian they owned in a prosperous Pittsburgh suburb, right, was sold at a foreclosure auction this year. When the Ryans purchased the house, John worried that it was a financial stretch, but he considered his prospects bright.
