Richard Babcock said Tuesday he is stepping down as editor of Chicago magazine on April 15, his 20th anniversary in the position.

Richard Gamble, the monthly magazine's publisher, said the process of recruiting a successor has begun and Babcock, 64, will assist in the leadership transition as a special advisor through June.

Babcock's editorial reign has spanned three owners, the most recent being the Chicago Tribune Media Group, which acquired Chicago in 2002.
