Hiker Is Injured in 200-Foot Fall
A 20-year-old Covina woman was rescued Saturday after slipping off a treacherous hiking path and plunging 200 feet down Mt. San Gorgonio.
Alissa Sauter was hospitalized with head trauma, a broken leg and other injuries that occurred midday as she and her father walked down the Vivian Creek Trail.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Shannon Kovich said Sauter slipped when she, her father and members of a San Diego County search-and-rescue team crowded along an icy, narrow stretch of trail.
By late afternoon, a sheriff’s helicopter with a medic was able to reach Sauter and fly her to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Last February, a 25-year-old Seal Beach man hiking along the same trail died when he fell 400 feet down a chute of ice.
