Police have identified one of the suspects involved in a shooting, last month, at Texas Southern University. You may remember, eight people were hurt following the "Trae Day" concert, an event for at risk kids.
Police have filed charges against 19-year old Albert Walker Mondane or "A-Walk" as he's known on the street. Detectives are hoping someone will recognize him and help them get him off the streets.
Detectives also said this isn't the only arrest they expect to make - there could be about a dozen more arrests in this case.
While the investigation is on going, Detectives said they at this point Mondane is the only person who had been identified by witnesses as firing a gun on July 22 shortly after the "Trae Day" concert at TSU. Though they suspect others may also be charged with firing weapons. "We are putting together a sort of roster of individuals that will be charged with other offenses related to the crime," said HPD Detective Fil Waters.
Waters said Mondane was part of two groups which were at odds that night. He said one of the groups is a known organized criminal gang - the other is much smaller. Around 8:30 p.m., as the festivities were wrapping up, Waters said the two groups started firing at each other - into a crowd of about a thousand people. "We have eight people shot, by the grace of God nobody's dead," Waters said.
Those shot ranged in age from 14 to 21. Six of the injured belonged to the gangs, the other two were innocent bystanders. "We are relieved," said "Horseman" one of the "Trae Day" promotors.
"Horseman" said he's glad HPD is getting closer to closing this case and arresting those responsible for trying to turn this event, intended to give back, into something negative "We were doing something real positive for the community to help kids - people (who have) unfortunate (family situations,) " said "Horseman"
"Trae Day" features performances by various artists, organizers also make sure students heading back to school have supplies the they need. "Horseman" said they will hold the annual event again next year though they do plan to bring in extra security.
As for Mondane, there is a warrant out for his arrest, if you know where he is call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
