The Obama administration has asked the Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8, the voter-passed initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California. Ironically, the heavy black turnout for Barack Obama in the presidential race in 2008 was a major factor in the passage of Proposition 8 that year. Black voters sided heavily against same-sex marriage, as these maps of Los Angeles County precincts indicate. At the time, Obama did not support same-sex marriage, but he has since changed his position. Polling indicates that opinion among black voters has shifted as well. Several polls have shown that a substantial majority of California voters now support marriage rights for same-sex couples.
