Could a pair of goldfish survive in the L.A. River?
A Times reporter sought to find out. Little Ed passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, after 156 days of swimming in water from the L.A. River. His tankmate, Little Antonio, died about 111 days after he arrived.

Bringing a sad but inevitable close to a decidedly unsound and unscientific experiment, a goldfish named Little Ed died Saturday after 156 days of living and even thriving in an aquarium filled with water from the Los Angeles River.

Little Antonio, a goldfish made almost famous by living over 111 days in water from the Los Angeles River, was found dead in his tank in the latimes.com newsroom at 1:58 a.m. Monday. He was believed to be about five months old.
