Suspected stick of dynamite in Hollywood apartment is movie prop
Authorities locked down an elementary school, cordoned off several blocks and evacuated residences and businesses Monday afternoon after officers investigating a reported shooting in Hollywood found what appeared to be a stick of dynamite in the suspected gunman’s apartment.
But the dynamite turned out to be a movie prop, police said, which was recovered after officers and a bomb squad swarmed the 6600 block of Sunset Boulevard. Officers allegedly recovered a shotgun and other weapons from the apartment, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Police were investigating Monday night why the fake dynamite was in the suspect’s apartment. “We don’t know why he had it or how it came into his possession,” Officer Karen Rayner said.
The incident began when police received a report of a man firing a shotgun at construction workers from an apartment building on Hollywood Boulevard. Rayner said three people were taken into custody, including a man “identified as the shooter.” Their names were not released.
As a bomb squad searched the apartment, officers shut down an area bounded by Sunset Boulevard on the north, De Longpre Avenue on the south, North Cherokee Avenue on the west and Seward Street on the east. The closures snarled rush-hour traffic in the area. The gunfire also prompted officials to lock down nearby Selma Elementary School, at 6611 Selma Ave., the Los Angeles Unified School District said.
