Big rig crash on 60 Freeway cleared

A big rig that overturned, blocking several lanes during this morning’s commute on the eastbound 60 Freeway between Hacienda Heights and the City of Industry, has been cleared from the scene, authorities said.

The accident, reported at 6:11 a.m., occurred on the freeway at Azusa Avenue, said David Porter, a safety officer with the California Highway Patrol.

No injuries were reported and the only damage was to the truck itself. Officials had thought at least one person may have been injured, and paramedics were sent to the scene, but everyone involved was uninjured, Porter said.

The roadway was cleared at 9:18 a.m. and traffic has returned to normal.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, Porter said.

Two cars were in a separate accident behind the big rig, potentially a reaction from when the truck overturned, Porter said.

Traffic piled up this morning for a few miles after the crash shut down the right four lanes on the 60 and the eastbound freeway onramp at Azusa Avenue. It was this morning’s only major accident to disrupt traffic, Porter said.

Porter said the big rig’s contents were in a container similar to those docked at shipping ports, making the cleanup easier.

“It’s just your standard rollover,” he said.
