Moving day for homeless person encamped on 1st Street overpass

Los Angeles Fire Department removes bags of belongings from a makeshift setup suspended 15 feet above Figueroa Street.

Authorities are used to finding homeless encampments around downtown Los Angeles.

But then there was the camp discovered today suspended at least 15 feet above Figueroa Street, perched on the scaffolding of the 1st Street overpass.

The Los Angeles Fire Department had to use a ladder truck to remove more than a dozen garbage bags of personal belongings – mostly clothing – from a makeshift living space. A video shot by radio station KPCC shows clothing covering a large part of the four-lane boulevard. By noon, however, most of the clothing – and the fire truck – was gone.

Los Angeles police officials said they checked out the bridge after receiving complaints from people who work in nearby office buildings.

Officials said they think one man lived there, possible for up to two years. It’s unclear how the man was able to scale up to his perch.

Despite the cleanup, officials left behind a blue laundry basket filled with clothing in the midair camp. Also visible, in addition to a crowd of pigeons, was an electrical cord.
