CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE

A big rig overturned Monday on a section of Angeles Forest Highway where large trucks have been temporarily banned following a deadly accident in which a double-decker truck descending Angeles Crest Highway smashed into a busy La Canada Flintridge shopping area.

The accident occurred about 8:15 a.m. on southbound Angeles Forest Highway, 16 miles south of the Antelope Valley Freeway and five miles from the junction with Angeles Crest Highway, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Williams.

The truck was hauling a load of gravel when it lost control, hit the mountainside and then flipped onto its side, Williams said. Most big-rig trucks on the highway are subject to a 90-day ban that was established April 5 by Caltrans and prohibits them from using Angeles Forest and Angeles Crest highways.

A preliminary investigation found the big rig was delivering its haul to a local construction project and had the proper permits to use the road, Williams said. Several other trucks above the 3-ton limit were turned back today after CHP officers determined they did not have the proper paperwork.
