Boy Dies in Crash Near Disneyland

A teenage driver plowed a Cadillac Seville into a family of six Monday near Disneyland in Anaheim, killing a 7-year-old boy and critically injuring another boy as they crossed busy Katella Avenue during rush hour, police said.

The family was apparently leaving one of the popular theme parks nearby, authorities said.

A crosswalk in front of the Anaheim Convention Center on Katella was littered with tennis shoes, bags and wreckage.

“It was a huge debris field,” said Anaheim Fire Department Capt. Jamie Hirsch.

The injured also included a man and another boy, who were listed in fair condition. All the injured were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. A woman and an infant suffered minor injuries, police said.

Details were few Monday evening. Authorities did not disclose the identities of the victims but said they were from the Bay Area. They said the six family members, a couple in their 30s and four children, were walking in a crosswalk about 5:50 p.m. when they were struck by the maroon Cadillac.

Police said it appeared the family had the green light and the right of way. In 2001, Anaheim renovated the resort area to encourage pedestrians.

On Monday evening, as the body of the boy still lay on the street, revelers could be heard from Disney’s California Adventure. Police blocked the street to investigate the crash.

The driver, 17, and the passenger, another boy of 17, were taken to an Anaheim police station for questioning, authorities said.
