Riverside Co. sheriff’s parole board job is official
Riverside County Sheriff Bob Doyle has been appointed to the state parole board, the governor’s office said Wednesday.
Doyle, 54, of Murrieta, surprised staff members and other county officials last week when he announced that he would resign to take the post.
He joined the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1975 and was elected sheriff in 2002 with 66% of the vote. He cruised to a second term in 2006 with 72% of the vote.
During his tenure, Doyle increased the department’s staff to meet the explosive growth in the county and advanced a $148-million communications system, scheduled to be working in 2010.
County supervisors credited Doyle and his team with crafting a quick and cost-effective plan to expand the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning to address jail overcrowding. His term was marred by allegations that the department awarded civilian badges to campaign contributors.
County officials expect Doyle to step down four to six weeks after formally being appointed to the board.
The appointment requires state Senate confirmation.
