Space shuttle Endeavour to fly over local landmarks on way to LAX
It wouldn’t be a trip to Southern California without a visit to Disneyland.
The Anaheim park is one of several Los Angeles-area landmarks that space shuttle Endeavour will fly over before landing Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport, according to NASA. Also on deck: the Getty Center, Griffith Observatory and the California Science Center, the retired orbiter’s new permanent home.
The Los Angeles flyover will mark the end of Endeavour’s farewell aerial tour which is slated to begin at dawn Wednesday when it departs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Flown atop a modified Boeing 747, the shuttle will dip low over several NASA sites in the southern United States before landing in Houston, where it will spend Wednesday night.

The orbiter is set to reach Edwards Air Force Base on Thursday afternoon, where it will refuel for its California route. The shuttle will depart at 7:15 a.m. Friday, passing low over Palmdale, Lancaster, Rosamond and Mojave before heading north to Sacramento. After flying over the Capitol, the shuttle will head to San Francisco before continuing its journey to L.A.
Additional details of the route are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
The shuttle was originally scheduled to leave Kennedy Space Center early Monday, but was twice delayed by thunderstorms between Florida and Houston. After arriving in Los Angeles, the shuttle will be housed in an airport hangar as final preparations are made for its October move to the California Science Center’s Samuel Oschin pavilion. The two-day trek through the city’s streets is scheduled to begin Oct. 12.
