Gay pride parade participants dress as Supreme Court justices to celebrate
One group of gay-marriage supporters was so hopeful that the Supreme Court would rule in their favor Wednesday that they pre-ordered a set of black robes to sport during the gay pride weekend festivities in San Francisco.
The five men and women donned the robes and cardboard masks with pictures of the Supreme Court justices’ faces at a lesbian parade from San Francisco’s Mission district to the Castro on Saturday.
One of them carried a sign that said, “The Supremes put a ring on it.”
Susan Kennedy, 62, of Oakland sported the visage of justice Elena Kagan. Kennedy has been with her partner for 28 years. They married in 2008 before the passage of Proposition 8 banned gay marriage in California.
With the Supreme Court’s rulings rolling back the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, their marriage will once again be recognized by the state, and they will be able to take advantage of federal benefits extended to married couples.
“This is probably the best gay pride parade I can remember, and I’ve been to all of them,” Kennedy said. “This one is life changing.”
