  • I am very pleased to read the illustrated stoty of Haj in LA Times. This story will help people of other faith to understand Islam. They will realized that Islam is religion of peace not of violence. I am sure that LA Times will keep on providing useful material about Islam throughg artcles on different aspects of Islam

  • One thing I notice among my freinds and colleagues that being a Muslim I do have an in depth knowledge of their faith as well. I am saying this is because many rituals performed during Haj come from Abraham and Adam (as). These were both prophets that all peoples of the book know of and revere. The Kabah, stoning of Satan, visiting a place called Mt Arafat have historical background dating back to the time of Adam. Perhaps an op-ed to inform all about this historical background would enlighten people and they would understand it better.

  • I would like to thank the LA Times for publishing this article. I too made the Hajj in 2007, and had an incredibly safe and well organized trip. As for the Kabaa, perhaps your research team might want to check a bit more closely concerning its origins. I embraced Islam from another religious tradition and feel no need to defend Islam or condemn other traditions. I am honored to have performed the hajj, grateful that you have done this marvelous piece, and proud to live in a country where speech is still relatively free.

  • Quran Sura (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."

  • Greg, Mike and for all those who choose to ignorantly criticize another religion or culture, and pretend to know more about it than those who practice and believe in it for the mere fact that it appears foreign to you and does not follow the norm only portrays your low character and your own backwardness.. I advise you to educate yourselves before attempting to educate others. It will only result in your own humiliation. Every religion and culture has a beauty and uniqueness of its own, and the only reason for there being no peace is because of the existence of ignorant and shameful people like yourselves :)

  • Although it is understandable that some people would feel helpless when they Mecca and realize that their "hajj lessons" were not up to par. However, instead of criticizing their journey, they fail to realize that every hardship is a test from Allah, and besides wasn't it THEIR choice to make the decision to perform their pilgrimage? Those who fail to see the true beauty in every test from Allah are not only forgetting the true reason for their hajj trip but i must admit, for someone who has not been and wishes she could go, I am saddened to see that many people have not taken advantage of an opportunity that many can only dream of.

  • I am a 17 years old Muslim, born and raised right here in California. I am very proud of being an American Muslim and one of things I look forward to doing is performing the Hajj. How ironic when people say that “Muslims have it backwards”. How desperate have we become to pass a judgement without spending any time getting to know a good muslim. I invite you to please visit a local mosque in your neighborhood and get to know a muslim before labeling them. Please don’t live in the times of 21st century being ignorant. You just show how little knowledge you have and so quick to believe what media portrays. :)

  • Islam is the fastest growing religion in the U.S. THe comments of the Islam-bashers here are quite amusing, and futile. Conversions to Islam, and general interest in it only rose higher in the U.S. after 9/11.

  • I really appreciate the LA Times publishing an article like this in the California section and wish to express my sincere gratitude to Ashraf Khaleel, Irfan Khan, and the Times staff involved in this work. The huge photo of the mosque in Mecca taken by Khan, with the throngs of worshipers circumambulating around the Ka'bah, brought back wonderful memories and feelings of the Hajj journey I took last year. Also, I totally agree with Ellen Hajjali in the audio slideshow about the city of Medina being a very peaceful place. performing Hajj who has the means and the time.
