Gov. Jerry Brown to discuss state budget deal
Gov. Jerry Brown will talk about the budget deal he has reached with Democratic legislative leaders at a news conference Tuesday afternoon in the state Capitol.
Details of the plan began to emerge on Monday. They include major victories for the governor on a plan to direct more public school dollars to districts that serve English-learners and poor students. The plan also uses more conservative revenue estimates put forward by the Brown administration.
A legislative analyst’s estimate had revenues about $3 billion higher than the governor’s plan.
The budget also reflects the priorities of the Democratic leaders of the Legislature. Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) helped win partial restoration of dental benefits for poor adults, something that was cut by lawmakers during recent lean fiscal years. Mental health spending, another Steinberg priority, will also be increased in the new fiscal year, which begins on July 1.
Assembly Speaker John A. Perez (D-Los Angeles), helped win a plan to help middle-class students pay their tuition at California’s public universities.
Lawmakers are expected to vote on the budget later this week. They face a June 15 deadline to pass a spending plan, or face the prospect of having their pay docked under a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2010.
