A mother who was crossing the street with her 9-year-old daughter has died after being hit by a big rig in Hollywood early Tuesday, Los Angeles police said. The girl appeared to be in stable condition at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police and fire personnel responded to West Sunset Boulevard and North Bronson Avenue about 7:50 a.m. after reports a car hit pedestrians.

Los Angeles police Officer Wendy Reyes said a semi-truck was traveling south on Bronson Avenue when it struck the mother and her child inside a crosswalk near Joseph Le Conte Middle School.

The driver of the big rig remained at the scene and has not been arrested, Reyes said. She did not have any additional information about the victims as of Tuesday afternoon.

The identity of the mother was not immediately released.

The crosswalk is near the middle school, but a staff member there said a 9-year-old girl would be too young to attend the school. The staff member, though, added Le Conte shares its campus with Citizens of the World Charter School, which serves younger students.

A woman who answered the phone at the Hollywood campus of the charter school said she had no immediate information related to the incident, including whether the girl was enrolled.
