The argument of parents as unsuitable role models is credible, but why not apply the same to public school teachers? Why are our children influenced by them? If someone wants to be the primary role model for their children, then the state has no power to take that away (Excluding cases of abuse). This ruling needs to be overturned. While the school districts say they have the children's best interests at heart, what is truly in their best interest is determined by parents first. Also, the consistent, CREDIBLE studies that show that homeschooled children have higher test scores than those attending public schools...it adds up.

As someone who considers himself self taught, I think it's ridiculous. Although currently in university as a mature student, I've worked with no small number of people with graduate degrees who seem barely literate and wholly incapable of critical thought. In spite of that, this ruling, if I understand correctly, would allow these barely literate philistines to home school their children while at the same time dis-allowing intelligent autodidacts from the same. That said, I fully support the setting of standards whereby the parent or guardian is required to prove proficiency in the subject matter if the children are to be home schooled.

Civil courts prevent subversion of the constitutional right to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. The ruling protects us from having unregulated fascist bund schools here, producing youths much like Hitler Youth who can be easily armed under lax gun laws that make possible caches of weapons ready for future takeover of neighborhoods by armed religious fanatics.

Read the "pie" on your IRS booklet. See how much we pay lenders interest on the national debt, mostly because of wars. Bush began another war then heads his "education project" even though he's too dim to notice spelling of "nuclear."& says noo-que-lur. He puts religious schooling first & steals our work(tax payments) for war against non-Christians who live over oil pools.

"Idiotic liberal loons" & teachers' unions are attacked by P.A. Without liberal (liberating) policies, all fertile men would be forced to be fathers, even if they regretted causing an unwanted pregnancy. A recent posting on another L.A.TIMES site said the Mexican womb is the way to outnumber all of us for the "Reconquista." Unions gave us 8 hour work days, ended child labor & still lobby for better schools.

"Dad, a tither, is boss." Hitting kids is "discipline." That's the theme of most books in my big research collection of religious propaganda, "Be sure they never hear or believe anything atheistic that destroys the alibi for tithing. Make them think aand vote like their church leaders do." That's how we got Warmakers Bush & Cheney, "divinely forgiven" for stealing taxes to enrich buddies selling us war merchandise that kills people.

Not all public school students are subjected to drugs, disrespect, anger, violence, searches, misfits, bilingual classes, no homework, class disturbances, fighting, racism and fear. I believe if teachers need credentials then parents who want to home school their children should be required to obtain credentials.

While I understand where the "other side" is coming from (some parents might NOT be qualified to teach. Please note that I'm not meaning "qualified" in a legal way. Home schooling, I'm sure, can be used as an escape from the public school system- but depending where you are in California, perhaps public schooling is a better choice. It's also what's in the best interest of the CHILD. However, the public school system seems to not have enough resources to sustain the current minors enrolled in the system. And they're wanting to cram more fish into the sardine can? Clarice, 16, Home Schooled (and lovin' it!).

If it is a social necessity that parents must be credentialed by the state to homeschool their own children, then one would think it would be an even more urgent necessary for the state to require a stringent credentialing process allowing them to become parents in the first place. Hmmm Probably best not to give them any ideas. Freedom is so messy.

To Joel: Your motives are surely heartfelt. However,it must be apparent to you that the government HAS to educate the children because so many parents are failing as both teachers and role models. The old adage "Do as I do not as I say" has certainly not helped so many children who are dealing with abuse, alcohol, drugs, immorality and general malaise. These children need whatever assistance they canget from the outside world. It's all they have.
