Deputy struck by suspect’s vehicle is released from hospital

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was hit Friday afternoon by a vehicle driven by a suspect who was later shot to death by authorities has been released from the hospital, authorities said.

The incident began when a woman and her boyfriend got into a fight and he pulled a knife and took her children from a shopping center in the 11400 block of South Vermont Avenue, said Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. The man, who was driving the woman’s car, dropped the children off at a nearby supermarket and returned, he said.

The woman had already called authorities and her boyfriend, a parolee, told her that they would have to kill him, Corina said.

The man then drove the car toward the deputy, and other officers on the scene shot the man, authorities said.

“The suspect’s vehicle first struck a parked car and then struck a deputy,” said Steve Whitmore, the sheriff’s spokesman. Fearing for their safety, deputies shot the suspect, he said.

The injured deputy was released Friday evening from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, authorities said.
