From Times Staff Reports
A Hemet man suspected of shooting a 15-year-old African American boy was arrested following a four-hour standoff with police, authorities said Thursday.
Jose Garcia Chavez, 20, is accused of shooting the teen four times in the stomach Saturday in an apparent hate crime on the 1900 block of West Acacia Avenue, Hemet Police Lt. Jeff Pinney said. The teen, whose name was not released, is expected to survive.
Chavez surrendered at his mother’s home in the 300 block of Elmwood Avenue, Pinney said.
