Lawyer tries to cut out Japan

The Japanese government should not cooperate with the U.S. investigation of a Japanese businessman arrested on suspicion of shooting his wife to death in Los Angeles in 1981, his lawyer said.

Japanese officials on Sunday interviewed Kazuyoshi Miura, who was arrested Friday in the U.S. territory of Saipan as he tried to pass through immigration control at the airport to take a flight home.

 
    Miura, 60, had been convicted in Japan in 1994 of the murder of his wife, Kazumi Miura, but that verdict was overturned by the country's high courts 10 years ago. The 1981 shooting caused an international uproar, in part because he blamed the attack on robbers, reinforcing Japanese perceptions about violence in the United States.
