From the Homeroom, The Times’ blog about education:

Not for nothing is the motto of Lewis Continuation High School “Bridge to the Future.” Two of the Sun Valley school’s students have again excelled in a bridge-building contest.

Jonathan Portillo and Eddie Garcia placed first and second in the efficiency category of the Regional Bridge Building Contest. That means they go to Chicago next month for the 2008 International Bridge Building Contest.

It’s the third year in a row that Lewis has done well in the competition, says proud Principal Chuck Trudeau. “We are the only continuation school in the competition.”

Continuation high schools, according to Los Angeles Unified School District officials, are small campuses -- Lewis has about 100 students -- offering instruction to young people who are at risk of not completing their education.

Ask a reporter

What’s with the new proposal to run a trolley line down Broadway in downtown L.A.?

The idea of a trolley is being considered as part of a larger effort to revitalize the historic avenue, including reviving many of the old movie palaces. Backers say the trolley would help people get around the sprawling downtown area, which has several clusters of development, including the South Park area around Staples Center, the Arts District to the east and the Bunker Hill area. At this point, the trolley proposal is in the early stages of study, and it’s unclear how much it would cost or who would pay for it. Officials have also talked about turning Broadway into a transportation corridor where only buses, rail and pedestrians would be allowed.
