Japanese Consul Masaru Dekiba talks to Japanese media outside Parker Center today after authorities announced Japanese businessman Kazuyoshi Miura, accused of conspiring to have his wife murdered 27 years ago in Los Angeles, hanged himself with a piece of his shirt in his jail cell Friday night.

Japanese businessman Kazuyoshi Miura committed suicide in jail less than 24 hours after being taken to Los Angeles to face trial on a charge of conspiring to murder his wife. A timeline of the case:

-- Nov. 18, 1981: Miura and his wife, Kazumi, 28, are shot while visiting Los Angeles.

 
-- 1982: Kazumi dies after spending a year in a coma.

-- 1984: Japanese magazine publishes stories saying Miura collected about $1.4 million from life insurance policies on his wife. An actress says Miura asked her to kill his wife in a separate incident.

-- 1985: Miura convicted of attempted murder in the case involving the actress and is sentenced to six years in prison.

-- 1988: Los Angeles County charges Miura with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

-- 1994: Miura is convicted in Japan of his wife's murder.

-- 2003: Conviction is overturned by Japanese Supreme Court.

-- Feb. 22, 2008: Miura is arrested on 1988 warrant when he visits U.S. territory of Saipan.

-- Sept. 26: Murder charge is dismissed on grounds of double jeopardy.

-- Oct. 10: Miura is extradited to California and found dead in jail cell after hanging himself.
