Slow down cars to a crawl while giving clear preference to pedestrians? Won't that make it harder for LAPD to catch crooks running through the alleys?

Wow! The idea would be great in some cases, but I really think that maybe their talking about twenty or thirty years from now the way our government move to do things now a days

All of this sounds good ! But until you get all the drug dealers off the street ! and put them to work Where they can have some self respect ! It's easy to sit on your back side and sell the stuff ! and not have to work. Some of these people can't even afford a belt to hold there pant up ! What happen to our youth? And someday we are going to turn all of this over to them ! I hope that i'm dead !!

great thinking and responses! make surfaces reflective as well as permeable and they'll reflect heat for global warming relief. pride, beauty, ownership and functionality will bring community awareness and safety as well.

Hey civic leaders why don't you spend more time and effort to beautify the main streets of LA not the back alleys. LA is a city that has fallen to the back of the pack from most cities!

It is one of those ideas that should be tried. Everybodies concerned should be heard and a compromise that takes into account a more green goal should be reached. I believe in it. I think we need to take suggestions like this more seriously instead of fighting a war for oil in Iraq.

It's great idea. Some of you get it, yeah! Others don't, boo. Permeable surfaces would greatly improve so much in our environment like run-off, ocean pollution, air quality and heat. Even alleys needed for garage access could be permeable. Attention chases crime; neglect allows it. WORD.

This is all good, but after the alleys are cleaned up will the city ever repave my street, Cantara St., in Reseda. Not surfaced since the 40's shameful!!

I lived in a VERY nice city where there were parks and a desire to keep the city "beautiful". You know where a mugger stands out? In the middle of a beautiful, serene park. Where kids play, and parents see their future building. The realist doesn't understand the jail system either, quite simply there will always be muggers. Prevention is worth a pound of cure. By not allowing places to exist where these criminals can gather and hunt their prey, they will not stay. Praise to the urban developers for their vision of beauty, and it's ability to stave off the harmful aspects of living in a big city.

Among the 2008 Top International cities for tourism London is # 1, Paris and Singapore are on the list. Shanghai is 13th, Beijing 23rd and LA 31st!
