Walmart is a great store. I don't shop there all the time. But when I need a new flat screen, vacuum cleaner, etc they have the best deals. I have lived in the area for years and it would be great to shop in the neighborhood. Where will it be located?

How can Wal-Mart be bad for small business, Cassandra suggested reading "In Sam We Trust." Try reading "Sam Walton, Made In America" as well, Wal-Mart started out as a small mom and pop store but he was constantly looking for ways to be better, too many businesses small and large don't strive for excellence, they keep doing things the same way they have been doing them for years and when a company comes in that does it different they complain that they can't compete. Should we force consumers to have to shop at businesses that fail to serve the ever changing needs of the consumer or should they have a choice where they want to shop.

I just got emailed this story, I lived there for years, ABOUT TIME!! politicians dont give a hoot about that area, Why because they are Hispanic! politicians have ignored and abused those people forever, kudos to them who are standing up for themselves, if the unions dont like walmart, it is simple dont buy there, but they have no business hurting low-income Hispanic families

How much did Walmart pay Eddie and the LA Times? A new all time low for the LA Times...where has your quality gone?

I do not live in this area, but I can tell you that WalMart does not cause small businesses to leave, the customers do, by driving past them on their way to WalMart. Where I live,, every WM has a Kohl's,Payless Shoes, and small eateries. The wages are good,I have health insurance, stock, and profit sharing. WalMart gives money back to the community through donations to schools, organizations and scholarships. Not all merchandise is "Made in China". I buy tortillas made in Redding,CA by Canteca Foods, a small business w/5 employees. Now that's food for thought, tortilla maker.

I would like to comment on this article, myself and about 45 other residents, walked our neighborhood we helped collect the 4,000 signatures so far.In our 2 months of visiting families, Not once did we hear our neighbors mention Nafta, evil empires, made in China, or unions. What we heard over and over again, yes we support you! Our families need jobs, we cannot afford these prices! Also, in response to another comment, the owners of Playa Azul and Rauls' both support Wal-Mart.
Finally, To those who do not live here, we would ask for the similar respect, please allow those of us who will be impacted most , decide our own destiny

About Time! Our families actually count to someone! I have spoken with all of neighbors, this is desperately needed in this area. I agree with the earlier comment from Juan, Ridley-Thomas should be leading the charge instead of fighting the will of the people.

Eddie is right on the money! Our community is in dire need of a wal-mart and more decent jobs, what has Dan Rosenfeld done for the community? We will find out who Ridley Thomes works for the union or the families who pay his salary as well as, Dan rosenfeld.

I have lived in the Florence District most of my life and I have seen an improvement over the years. It's people like Angel with a negative mentality that make me love my neighborhood even more, because unlike Angel, I have hope for my community. First of all, LAPD does not patrol this district, the Sheriff's do and they do a good job. I say, bring it on...build a Walmart and a Target. I'm all for it.
