From Times Staff and Wire Reports

California’s first human case of West Nile virus this year has been confirmed in a 27-year-old Kern County man, state health officials said Friday.

Although most people infected with the virus develop no symptoms, in fewer than 1% of cases a potentially fatal complication can occur.

The Kern County man was hospitalized with a neurological condition.

Officials reminded the public to take preventive steps such as wearing insect repellent and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Bites from infected mosquitoes pass the virus to humans.
