Thieves hit Multnomah Elementary School’s water pipes
They make off with copper and brass equipment, shutting off supply. Temporary repairs are made at the El Sereno campus.
An El Sereno elementary school was without water today after thieves stole copper pipes and brass valves from its main water line Sunday.
The thieves came to Multnomah Street Elementary School in a white van, shut off the main water valve and stole several five- to six-inch long pipes and brass valves, said Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Nadia Gonzalez.
“They were stolen due to their value,” Gonzalez said.
Copper is popular metal among thieves because it can fetch more than $3 a pound at recycling centers.
Gonzalez said portable toilets and drinking water were brought in for the school’s 650 pupils and 65 staff members.
Repair crews put in a bypass line to temporarily fix the problem and will replace the stolen parts over the weekend, said Mike Brady, a maintenance director at the district.
Brady said there have been similar thefts at other district schools.
