Wind gusts of up to 60 mph to hit region today; warnings issued
Winds gusts of up to 60 mph are expected to hit Southern California throughout Wednesday, potentially knocking down power lines or creating other dangerous conditions, forecaster warned.
The National Weather Service issued a high-wind warning for Santa Barbara County’s south coast and for the Santa Barbara Mountains. A wind advisory has also been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, several parts of Ventura County, and mountains in Los Angeles County.
Kathy Hoxsie, a meteorologist with the weather serivce, said a high-pressure system from the north was pushing wind south from Santa Barbara down into Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Sustained winds in the mountainous areas of Santa Barbara were blowing between 25 and 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, she said.
“Those winds are strong enough to knock down power lines or knock trees into power lines,” Hoxsie said.
She added that the high-wind warning will expires as the winds move south later Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile winds in Ventura and Los Angeles counties will average between 20 and 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, she said. Those gusts are strong enough to be hazardous to drivers.
“They’ll drive past a canyon or pass and it it’ll hit them unprepared,” Hoxsie said.
The wind advisories are expected to expire around 10 a.m. Thursday.
