The Times database on California's war dead is based on reporting from more than 420 Times staff-written stories dating back to December 2001. In addition, The Times collected data from the website icasualties.org and other published sources, as well as personal websites and new interviews with the family and friends of the deceased. The Times attempted to verify names, dates of death and other biographical information. As a result, in some instances The Times information differs from these other sources. Although the database is largely complete, The Times is still seeking more information about some service members.
