Maryke Swartz, senior research technician at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research observes a Pacific pocket mouse at the institute's captive breeding facility in Escondido. The 1.5-inch-long mouse was caught on the Camp Pendleton military base, where the species clings to existence on a firing range.
