Motorist dies in crash on the 210

July 8, 2008

A motorist was killed early Monday after a two-vehicle crash on the 210 Freeway left his car wedged under a parked semi-trailer, authorities said.

The crash on the eastbound 210, east of La Tuna Canyon Road near Tujunga, occurred about 7:50 a.m. when the motorist rear-ended the parked trailer, said Todd Workman, public affairs officer for the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the big-rig said he had stopped on the shoulder because of a problem with the trailer, Workman said.

The driver said he had detached the trailer and was sitting in the truck, waiting for help, when he saw in his rearview mirror a silver Mazda 3 veer onto the shoulder and crash into the trailer, Workman said.

COSTA MESA

Arrest made in weapons case

A man who was already on probation for domestic violence against his estranged wife has been charged with possessing illegal bombs and weapons after making new threats against her, authorities said Monday.

Ronald Gary Turner, 44, could face more than 13 years in prison if convicted on all counts, authorities said.

He was arrested last week after police received information that he possessed illegal weapons and had threatened his wife, whose name was not released.

On July 2, authorities pulled Turner's car over on the 22 Freeway and recovered handcuffs, pepper spray, knives and a stolen 9-mm firearm with its serial numbers removed.

During a subsequent search of his Costa Mesa home, they also found two homemade bombs with timers, two homemade guns, bomb-making materials, a bulletproof vest and listening devices.

Both bombs were safely detonated by the Orange County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad, and an investigation is ongoing, authorities said. Turner has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

MISSION VIEJO

Students must retake AP exams

A high school principal in Mission Viejo has told at least 300 students that they have to retake their advanced placement exams after an investigation found some students had cheated.

In a letter to parents, the Trabuco Hills High School principal said the College Board and Educational Testing Services nullified the scores of students who took the tests in May.

The letter said an investigation found that a "number of students" cheated on a statistics exam.

The probe also found the school failed to follow proper test-taking guidelines.
