A 26-year-old man remained in serious condition Monday after his hand was blown off while he tinkered with an explosive device at his Seal Beach home, officials said.

Shawn Gill underwent surgery at UCI Medical Center in Orange. His wound was not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Police and the Orange County sheriff’s bomb squad were called to the home, in the 3500 block of Camelia Street, at 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

“For some reason, he had an explosive device,” said Seal Beach Police Cpl. Raul Ahumada. “He was putting it together or taking it apart.”

The explosion prompted the evacuation of several nearby homes as police searched Gill’s residence.

No other explosives were found, authorities said.

Josefina Allison, who owns the home, declined to comment.

The sheriff’s investigation was continuing.
