Umberg Is Retiring From Reserve Duty
Tom Umberg, an Orange County assemblyman who revealed publicly last month that he had had a four-year extramarital affair, has retired from active service in the Army Reserve, an Army official said Saturday.
Umberg, who served last year as a terrorism prosecutor, retired effective June 30, said Jorge Swank, public affairs officer for the Army Reserve’s 63rd Regional Readiness Command in Los Alamitos.
Umberg’s chief of staff, George Urch, said the Democratic assemblyman was seeking time off from reserve service because of his busy schedule since his election in November.
As a reservist, Umberg had to serve one weekend a month when not on full-time duty.
“He doesn’t have the time to put into this the way he did before,” Urch said.
Umberg, who has announced his candidacy for the state Senate next year, was unavailable for comment Saturday.
He was in Georgia because his wife, Robin, was being sworn in as a brigadier general in the Army Reserve, Urch said.
