Proposition 8 discussion

1. The issue is constitutional, NOT about any "prevailing morality", which is relative, subject to facile manipulation; and tied more to ideology than to spirituality. The Founders declared that while majority rules, minority rights are protected. The Supreme Ct found many folks are protected classes, ie women, making up ½ the population; the exigency for small groups is far greater. We protect rights of "moralists", but not of folks whose morals are higher than those manipulating others with moralist power-play-politics. All states do business selling marriage licenses, so religious majority morality is irrelevant to gay marriage rights.

2. Inmoral= judging , imposing my values or beliefs, hurting others, lying.(sounds like religion to me) Moral= Telling the truth, helping others be themselves, praising each other, accepting each other, being supportive , caring, being inclusive. Must you be a gay person to know this? Is it different from yours?

3. Prop 8 is not something an individual has the right to vote on period. We don't have the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness if the majority of the population agrees with you. Its a problem of education, (lack thereof )and the church meddling in legal matters yet once more, the Church,I am yet to see a bigger foe in my lifetime. Its inevitable that gays will have the right to marry, but it will be after most other countries have already allowed it. Yes like slavery, in that we were one of the last countries too.

4. 2. The founding fathers wanted to protect us from the tyranny of the majority. This is why we have a bill of rights and a system of checks and balances. A simple majority vote was never intended to allow us to take away rights from a group of people we dont like. In the past the majority decided that it was acceptable to rape your wife, that it was ok to enslave fellow humans and black people were not worthy of using the same water fountains as whites. Without the courts, most of these things would never have changed.

5. 1. Our government has no business marrying anyone. Marriage is a religious institution, and in this country, we have the right to hold our own religious views. The government should grant the legal rights and responsibilities of marriage to any two consenting adults, while the decision about marriage should be left to each person's religion, not only for gay people, but people of different faiths and the divorced.

6. Go USA (trust me it is not about California only) and protect definition of marriage ! Do not be blinded by what media says. Most european communities do not support gay marriage . First off all many nice gays ,lesb. people I have known in my country would never push decicion to be married because of mutual respect between hetero . and homo. couples. We want hummanity to survive don't we ? Go USA

7. If churches don't want to allow gay marriage, fine. But why keep them from doing that in a legal setting? Once again, religion is putting its nose where it shouldn't.

8. I'm trying to understand the definition of immoral in the eyes of a gay person. How do you decide what is moral and what is not moral? What standard do you use to make these decisions? Please explain. Thanks.

9. Proposition 8 was passed by a broad coalition of concerned citizens like myself and people of faith. The no on 8 backers are foolish to think that one group of people (the Mormons) could have passed this on their own. They are just showing themselves to be religious bigots. The contribution we should all be upset about is the one for $1.25 million from the California Teachers Assoc. so they could indoctrinate 6 yr. olds about gay lifestyles. That is part of the gay agenda and CTA is on board. If anyone is upset about contributions it should be that one.
